Regal Rooms and Historical Treasures
After walking through the front court yard and exploring an inner courtyard you are welcome to explore the palace interiors rooms. Upon climbing the grand stair you are welcome to explore and learn the history of the State Apartments, once the grand setting for royal receptions and the Throne Room, bedecked in gold and crimson. We were quite fortunate to witness a large table being set in preparation for a gathering that evening in the dining room. Unfortunately no photography is permitted once you enter the grand stair.
Mary, Queen of Scots: A Compelling Tale
One cannot explore Holyroodhouse without delving into the compelling story of Mary, Queen of Scots. Her residence within these very walls, coupled with the adjoining chambers where her secretary was brutally murdered, resonates with tragic historical significance. Visitors can tread the path of this enigmatic queen, walking through the rooms she once inhabited.
The Abbey and Gardens: Serene Retreats
Once you complete your tour of the inner apartments, you are led back outside. Adjacent to the palace lies the ruins of Holyrood Abbey, a haunting yet beautiful testament to medieval architecture. Its weathered stones whisper tales of centuries past. The palace gardens, an oasis of tranquility, invite visitors to wander among well-manicured lawns and serene landscapes, offering respite from the city's bustle. You will find well kept green houses hidden along the path and as your continue your walk you will be awed by a spectacular view of Arthurs Seat, which is a hill making up most of Holyrood park.
Visiting Practicalities
For those planning a visit, it's advisable to allocate a few hours to fully absorb the grandeur and history encapsulated within the Palace of Holyroodhouse. I recommend utilizing the self guided tours equipment or joining a guided tour as they provide invaluable insights into the palace's history and significance. I also found the gift shop within the front gates of Holyroodhouse to have the best quality of souvenirs versus alot of the shops along the Royal Mile if you are looking for any Royal or Scotland related souvenirs.
