£ Cafe
About
Located a short walk from the Royal Mile, you can find yourself at Breakfast, Brunch & Lunch. This establishment is a cafe serving locally sourced food with all it's sausages being made in shop. Their handcrafted Scottish pork sausages, beef steak, lorne sausage and their gourmet burgers are made all by traditional methods, keeping the Scottish culture alive, reducing their carbon footprint and also ensuring that they are providing customers with food of the highest quality.
Breakfast Brunch and Lunch (also referred to as BBL) has been dubbed 'by a local food blogger @Lunchquest, "The premier place for a burger in the City", which is a testament to their hard work and quality. BBL has also introduced vegan breakfast, vegetarian options and has become Scotlands first vegan deli unit. I came to hear about BBL not from a blog or social media but from a cousin who attends the University of Edinburgh. We had asked him for recommendations for breakfast and he told us we should try their Bacon, Brie and Cranberry Panini (£4.60).
Our Experience
We had a long walk ahead today, as we had tickets for the Royal Yacht Britannia booked and so we wanted to have a quick bite before making our way over there, and decided this would be a great opportunity to try out the recommendation. We headed out from The Scotsman Hotel, and walked up High St, and turned right onto St. Mary's St (which after a few blocks turned into Pleasance) until we reached Breakfast Brunch and Lunch at 65 Pleasance. The whole walk took about 12 minutes.
The shopfront was unassuming, with a few tables outside and some dark wood paneling below the white sign that read 'Breakfast, Brunch & Lunch'. The inside had one other patron inside and we gazed at the extensive menu written above the deli on large black boards. They had a board with Hot Drinks, Burgers, Morning Rolls, Fillers, Jackets, Paninis, Vegan and Vegetarian options.
What shocked me first were the prices, for food produced locally and made with traditional methods the cost was incredibly affordable. Their Full Scottish Breakfast which is made up of link sausages, Lorne sausage, baked beans, fried mushrooms and tomatoes, egg and toast for only £6.40! The other aspects of the menu are also very affordable with their Breakfast Rolls all under £2.50, Burgers below £9.00 and all of their Panini's less than £5.00.
We each ordered my cousins recommendation, which was the Bacon, Brie and Cranberry Panini (£4.60). And words cannot begin to describe how good this panini was. The sweetness of the cranberry melded perfectly with the brie and the bacon, and bread was perfectly toasted, making it very easy to eat. I was expecting something much smaller for the price and was happily surprised to see how much I had. It was definitely a highlight of my visit to Edinburgh and would highly recommend a stop by. I plan to try other aspects of their menu, especially their burger and hope to see it featured on the Michelin Guide!
